OUR GOAL: Our family has a passion for helping others. Especially, the kids!
WHY are we spending time and energy on this page and on this topic of DYSLEXIA?
Yes, we have three (out of three) kids with some level of DYSLEXIA. So, to our family, this is important.
But it goes much BIGGER than our three kids.
It is estimated that 15-20% of the population has dyslexia. If the world has 7.8 billion people in it, that is 1,170,000,000 that may have dyslexia at the 15%! That number is huge. I don’t know about you, but that number is significant.
1 out of every 5 students in a classroom more than likely has dyslexia. In your typical 25 student classroom, a handful have dyslexia! Again, this is significant.
Dysgraphia, ADHD and anxiety are common to have alongside dyslexia; it is estimated about 30% have one of these diagnoses alongside dyslexia.
Other interesting facts that I learned when researching the prevalence of dyslexia.
· 5% of adults in the US are considered illiterate.
· 25% of adults in the US read at an elementary school level.
· High school students who have reading problems have a 62% drop out rate.
****Look at these numbers! When I do, I wonder how many of these have dyslexia that was NOT recognized or helped? I bet, a LOT!
I am not going to talk about the LACK of help for people with dyslexia in this post, I will save that for another.
I just wanted to present our GOALS of this page and why we are so passionate about helping others with dyslexia as we navigate this alongside you from our own family.
Our main goals are:
1. Continue to present educational facts about dyslexia as we learn them through our process.
2. Help present ways to advocate for your kids with dyslexia, as we are advocating together on a regular basis.
3. Share information from the kids that is genuine as they live with dyslexia and are in the process of learning to read NOW daily.
4. Encourage and inspire kids with dyslexia to not give up and hone in on their amazing strengths!
5. Help build and maintain confidence in kids with dyslexia. It can be easy to lose in an unsupportive environment and we want to see these kids shine!
