Even though dyslexia is common (many statistics say 1:5), it is still a very misunderstood learning difference. It can feel overwhelming as a parent when you first learn of this diagnosis for your child. I found the following resources to be very helpful as a good starting point:
Overcoming Dyslexia by Dr. Sally Shaywitz. This book is so helpful in understanding the physiological differences in the brain of a person with dyslexia. The book has rich information on identification of dyslexia, diagnosing, challenges faced by people with dyslexia, exercises to help strengthen the brain for reading and ways to raise their self esteem. It is a great place to start when choosing a book.
The Dyslexic Advantage: Unlocking the Hidden Potential of the Dyslexic Brain by Brock L. Eide and Fernette F. Eide. This is a great read incorporating valuable information on dyslexia and blending personal stories of very successful individuals with the diagnosis. This books provides a lot of great advice on how parents can recognize and build on the strengths of the dyslexic learner.
The Dyslexia Empowerment Plan: A Blueprint for Renewing Your Child's Confidence and Love of Learning by Ben Foss. This book is great to read after some of the others above. It has a lot of helpful myth busters to further understand the diagnosis. It is also is true roadmap on how to advocate for your child and help them build self-advocacy skills.
Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. This is a fictional story about a middle school girl who has dyslexia and managed to keep her learning struggles hidden. It was a great read to my two children with dyslexia.
I hope you enjoy these books. I would love feedback on other books that have been very helpful in your journey with dyslexia. Please feel free to comment suggestions.
